Madonna with Child and Donor (1401)

Author: Johannes de Petro
The massive block of Istrian white limestone with a deep relief of Madonna and child with donor preserves the original polychromy and gilding from the turn of the 15th century. The bottom edge of the frame bears the legible inscription: MC/CCI hOC OPV(s) F(eci)T (I)oha(ne)S de PETRO. Despite the flatness, his work can be placed in the world of Late “Soft” Gothic, which is represented in Istria and its hinterland primarily with wooden carvings. The proportionally large kneeling figure of the donor shows signs of the new spirit of the coming stylistic period.
