»Inter Utrumq(ue) Tuta« (1589)

Author: Domenico Tintoretto (?)
This veduta of Koper and the communal lands from late 16th century depicts the fortified island town and territory with salterns and the neighbouring hills. The painting is a topographical and historical document of Koper with a symbolic self-celebration inscription. The upper right corner contains the heraldic symbol of Mayor Pietro Loredan (three gold and three blue flowers). In Antiquity the most important Istrian town bore the name Aegida (after Athena's shield!). It owes its mythological origin to the yet unproved Greek colony.
