Hidden Staircase (around 1600)

The top of a majestic staircase, which leads us to the “piano nobile”, is dominated by a waist-length figure of a naked Nereid with raised arms: a figurehead from early 19th century. The ship's prow made of linden wood was richly polychromed and gilded: the pride of one of the ships that were discovering new horizons of maritime trade during the economic zeal of the 19th century. The details reveal the sophisticated taste of its master: the family coat-of-arms and a welcome with a gargoyle, and the master's affiliation with the town through a stylised symbolic double sun.
