Morosini Plaque (1269)

In the 13th century the island town of Koper was connected to land with an almost one kilometre long artificial embankment. A hundred paces before the very walls, an inscribed plaque was built into the Castel Leone fort, glorifying Captain Marino Morosini for his great construction activities in the town and its vicinity. Its content presents a unique historical and urbanistic document on the development of the island town, before the free commune finally became subordinate to La Serenissima.
