Ship Harquebus on Flintlock (18th Century)

The first harquebuses had a smaller barrel diameter; after the 1st half of the 16th century larger harquebuses were also made for various firing methods, the so-called large harquebuses (Archibusone). They could be used on horseback, leaned against a wall or for stationary firing from a pedestal. Also used were ship's harquebuses, which were very big (the barrel diameter could exceed 25mm). Today only weapons with a barrel diameter of up to 20mm are considered hand-held firearms; weapons with a larger diameter are categorised as artillery.

A great change in ignition mechanisms occurred with the introduction of flint – hence the flintlock, which, as the cock is released, slides the flint along the frizzen, which opens and exposes the gunpowder in the pan. The gunpowder is ignited by sparks caused by the flint as it comes into contact with the iron. In Europe the flintlock fully replaced the matchlock and wheel lock.

Length of the entire item 210cm; Barrel diameter 23mm; Weight 19kg.
