Square Piano

This fortepiano was made in a Venetian workshop in 1796.  It belongs to the rare historical musical instruments of this type preserved in Slovenia, and shows all the vital characteristics of such musical instruments of the last third of the 18th century. The rectangularly-shaped musical instrument on four legs is derived from the older clavichord and was very popular in the European region up to the mid-19th century, when the pianino gained prominence.

This musical instrument became the property of the Museum in 1912.  In 2006, it was restored in a restoration workshop in Florence to such an extent that two Italian fortepianists were able to conduct a concert on it.
